By the way the UPDATE at the bottom of the article is Dreher being sarcastic. There's plenty bitterness going on right now during the fallout of Prop 8...
Oh...and try to keep this thread civil. I will delete anything making light of people getting killed, any insinuations about their deserving it, etc. Have a little decency.
I'm not a Christian (I used to be catholic until my mom yelled at some nuns at our school--long story) but that's appalling in any century...
I'll see if this group exists in Canada. If they do, I'll be petitioning my MP to have them recognised as a hate/terrorist group, and criminalise support of these jerks in any way (at least in Canada).
#4 deleted, two collapsed inflammatory comments in one thread.
Thanks Tyler, sorry. I was too late to delete these myself as they had already been collapsed. Newsvine really needs to let moderators delete collapsed comments. Could you bring that up with the bosses?
I don't even know what to say.
The ignorance is unbelievable!
J.
Joyce: I know!
"UPDATE: On second thought, these Indian Christians probably oppose same-sex marriage, and are therefore nothing but bigots who have no claim on our compassion. Never mind. They brought this on themselves."
Still trying to win the war of words...it's a push. Clever or not...No one wins...especially those you are trying to help. If you want people to hear you, speak to them not against them.
#6 deleted. #8 deleted. Advocation for elimination of an entire group.
Show some tolerance, sheesh.
Show some tolerance, sheesh.
You wonder how these things go on in the world, and then you read these hateful comments, and you start to see how hateful thoughts soon turn to hateful actions...it isn't a long ways from one to the next.
#7.2 - Guys, this is the most 'unbelievably ugly hate driven drivel' that I've read so far on Newsvine. If everybody's hated OTHERS were up for being murdered, it wouldn't be too long that they too would be murdered because they surely must be hated right back! But who would murder them? Maybe we'd all be dead. Food for thought....GG
Don't follow you, GG... ED is responding to Tyler for deleting truly hateful remarks. Am I missing something? Thx.
#7.4 Yes Ellie, I was reffering to the article not Tyler. GG
Firstly, I would like to thank the community for collapsing the hateful posts found here. It is no longer unbelievable to me that supposedly civil people could spew such nastiness at any human being. I never question what is wrong with this world. Some people expose their true selves by speaking it to loud and clear.
I will address the article in a separate comment.
Firstly and foremost this is SATIRE and with the world at it's knee's sometimes invoking a bit of humor is needed.
It has already been found that some people respond with an uncomfortable situation with humor, and although some might take offense, to others it is as natural as breathing in and out.
I find religion as funny as it gets. It has brought nothing but hate, revenge and greed to our world... Is this offensive? Then prove me wrong.
And unless you have witnessed a Grandmother weeping outside a Mormon church because she is unable to attend her only son's wedding, because it is Mormon Law (you must belong to be in the building)....errr you have no right to tell me how nasty humans can be over religion. It runs deep in my family and has split many a generations.
And by the way, if you think its okay for lets see Muslims to come over here and walk the streets and pounding on doors to have you join their religion then you shouldn't be talking. It's time that religion takes a reality check and damage control, it's pretty bad.
Frankly I'd rather have a Christian Western World.
And unless you have witnessed a Grandmother weeping outside a Mormon church because she is unable to attend her only son's wedding, because it is Mormon Law (you must belong to be in the building)....errr you have no right to tell me how nasty humans can be over religion.
Michelle, I fail to see how, unless a person has lived your one specific scenario...they have no right to voice an opposing opinion on religion. That makes no sense.
I'm not religious but I am a Christian (there is a difference). Satire and sick inflammatory remarks are not the same thing, and regardless of belief, as I stated, this is a sad and sick situation. IMHO it does not need to be compounded with sad sick remarks. I did not singularly collapse your posts, the community did. That should maybe help you to reconsider your thought patterns.
By the way, I didn't condone anyone knocking on anyones door, you just twisted my words as a defense mechanism.
And why would your finding religion funny affect me?
I have so many incidences that I have lost count. And they do make sense, I have been to every known church of every affiliation and have found across the board the same thing.
Through my findings and I mean MINE, religion is nothing more than a cult of money and racism.
I have known many events which I have witnessed to side with my findings. One such small token is a Pastor...no older than I, that used to party til the sun came up, only to study the bible and get his followers to join and transform them into what he wants.
He lives in a house bigger than his church, he goes on vacation and buys diamonds (BLOOD DIAMONDS) for an investment and all the while he is looking down on all of his followers, telling them to give and not spend so lavishly~~HA!
What a crock, its a scheme its a sham and it's a crying out loud shame. The story goes all around and you can't tell me you haven't heard of these going on.
zeitgeistmovie.com
You are depending on mere men. And yes it happens and it is sad. Some call themselves Christian and they are not, others are horribly misguided, but try not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Sounds like you have had a rough time. I, for one, am sorry for that. Maybe you should go directly to The Source. He never fails.
See now, if there are Muslims or anyone else that are interested in peaceful knocking for conversion, I've got no problem with them knocking on my door. (That reminds me, I need copies of my own lit to pass out to the knockers.) I tolerate the petitioners of animal rights and global warming -etc. which frankly is much more annoying to me.
Like Richard I fail to see Satire in these remarks. They could be derived as threats even.
What a crock, its a scheme its a sham and it's a crying out loud shame. The story goes all around and you can't tell me you haven't heard of these going on.
Oh sure I have. I'm just surprised that you haven't heard about:
1) The selfless, life long work by Mother Teresa. helping the sick, elderly and poverty stricken. Was she a scheme or a sham?
2) Alcoholics Anonymous. They've helped thousands upon thousands of skid row destitutes put their lives back in order. Over 1/2 of the 12 Steps refer to God. Are they a scheme or a sham?
3) The Salvation Army. Scheme or sham?
Those are just three I came up with off of the top of my head. I can think of more if you want.
I think the real point is this: You obviously can express your distaste for religion, or a religion, but when you mock the deaths of people who are part of any group that crosses a lline of simple human decency.
Show some respect.
The violence was triggered in August by the murder of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati, a senior figure in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a hardline Hindu group, who had campaigned against the alleged forced conversions of poor Hindus by foreign-backed Christian missionaries.
Not to condone any of this, but it seems to me that there are people in this world who actually don't want to be converted to christianity. Can't say as I blame them. There's hardly a Sat. morning goes by anymore without some starry eyed young evangelical ringing my doorbell, wanting to introduce me to Jesus Christ.
Here's a thought... keep your religion to yourself. If I suddenly feel the need to be "born again," it's only a five mile drive to the closest church.
And all that aside, this looks to me more like tribal feuding than anything else...
you're probably right on two points. (1) some people get very indignate when you try too hard to convert them. for anyone that doesn't believe it, go anywhere on the vine and start the "my god's better than your god" routine.
(2) it very possibly is tied into tribal or regional feuding
I think what they are doing is making sure that you do not go to hell and get the second chance for the next coming of Christ. But if you do not believe in Christ that is another story. Even at that you will be given another chance to become Christian. Because God loves you!
alleged forced conversions
Jim, although I can understand your opinion, it is of no value to this article. It is clever that you camouflaged your rhetoric with a quote, but the taking of human life is much more important than a couple of overexcited youngsters ringing your doorbell. Regardless of faith or lack there of, we should all be appalled at the way humans mistreat each other.
Normally when you say "but" you negate the first part of your sentence. The lies propogated by the Hindu fanatics regarding alleged "forced" conversions which then resulted in bouties set on murdering Christians would seem to me to be something one would condemn.
That's the problem. It's "alleged". Not proven (and India's justice system is really screwed up. Heck, their government is considered more corrupt than Saudi Arabia, according to Transparency International).
But either way, killing isn't a justifiable response.
There's hardly a Sat. morning goes by anymore without some starry eyed young evangelical ringing my doorbell, wanting to introduce me to Jesus Christ.
It's called tolerance. Realize that it is part of Christian doctrine to spread the Gospel, and it's a lot better than "convert, submit or die."
So are you saying what goes around comes around??
Interesting story, told by an admitted conservative christian. Are there any corroborating stories? Whithout corroboration, I would be extremely hesitant to believe a word of this.
Is a Christian Conservative or is a Conservative Christian?
I wouldn't know, but I don't capitalize either word.
Out of curiosity did you believe the allegations of forced conversions?
No, considering that the source is a religious nut quoting other religious nuts, I don't believe a word of the whole mess until I see some sort of neutral corroboration.
No need to plant a seed.
Okey dokey.
My comment is not to that of directly above me.
By the way what is a Son of your Liberty?
My comment is not to that of directly above me
It would be good if you posted it in the correct place.
By the way what is a Son of your Liberty?
I'd like a little bit of whatever it is that you're smoking.
No, considering that the source is a religious nut quoting other religious nuts, I don't believe a word of the whole mess until I see some sort of neutral corroboration.
It's from the Times. Here's the journalist who wrote the story.
Thanks for those links, Andy.
I can't help if people are commenting while I am commenting.
I was referring to your statement:
I wouldn't know, but I don't capitalize either word.
Its called Bourbon. And you don't smoke it.
I was just wondering if you are trying to call out or associate yourself with a party or something.
In answer to 12.1 it might sound clever, but makes no sense.
12.4-Sound consistent-on the other hand do you always give both sides equal weight?
Also, I assume that you are against parochial schools, charity hospitals, etc. in this country. Should I also assume that you wish for the State to take care of everyone and everything?
I thought I was pretty clear about the weight I give to uncorroborated stories by religious people.........................NONE.
Corroboration granted?
Regarding the "also" part of my comment?
Should I also assume that you wish for the State to take care of everyone and everything?
You're free to assume anything you wish. However, ascribing such a philosophy to me would prove the old saying about assuming.
Regarding schools, hospitals and the like-nice try on picking on part of the question without answering the question.
I'd rather there weren't religious schools, hospitals seem ok. I don't choose for the state to control everything, your either/or mindset is interesting. What does that have to do with the supposed merits of this story?
I lived in Canada where the State paid for me to attend Catholic school. There's a hybrid for you.
Your assumption that Christian missionaries were knocking on doors, etc, etc., and negative comments based on that assumption, when it would seem that you have no clue. I therefore was showing you the other side of the coin, good works by these "evil missionaries" which has nothing to do with knocking on doors and/or overt attempts to convert but rather hospitals, schools, sanitation, financial help, etc.
I think you've got me confused with somebody else. I've made no comments about conversion or proselytizing.
Referring to #10 and you jumped in front of the bus. SOL LOL
From the Times article:
according to Christian aid workers in the eastern state of Orissa.
No, two sources quoting the same religious nuts doesn't constitute corroboration. The article you seeded is just rehashing the Times article, which is very clear in stating that the only sources are christian missionaries. Sounds as believable as a bible story.
What about this?
Several thousand homes have been razed and hundreds of places of worship destroyed, and crops are now wasting in the fields.
...
In recent weeks the violence has subsided but at least 11,000 Christian refugees remain in camps in Kandhamal, the district worst affected. “They are too scared to go home. They know that if they return to their villages they will be forced to convert to Hinduism,” Father Manoj, who is based at the Archbishop’s office in Bhubaneshwar, the state capital, said.
That's according to the Times' reporters.
I will not lose faith in human decency...I will not lose faith in human decency...I will not lose faith in human decency...
I'm making those same sounds, Pat.
Though, there is some serious testing going on here.

Maybe I just need to isolate myself from the rest of the world and watch reruns of Gilligan's Island all day. Maybe I'm just a wimp. I don't know what it is. But the hatred and violence in the human species really does break my heart. I can't think of any other species of animal that kills it's own, simply out of spite.
I know what you mean.
I'm floored enough by the story-- the "enlightened" reaction though, has me stunned.
I haven't seen Gilligan's Island in forever! Waynester has posted a couple book titles that I'm interested in . . . and there's the Big book that I could use some solace from. Have myself a wee newsvine break. I wonder if it's as hard as quitting smoking?

Gilligan's Island. Where sex was implied by a white, sequined dress, the only violence was the Skipper whacking Gilligan with his hat and the only hint of class envy was between Lovey Howell and Mary Ann. I miss those days.
NewsVine breaks can be good for the sanity. I plan on taking one. Maybe from tonight until at least Sunday. We'll see. Sounds like you've got some good reading material to keep you company
A person can only take so much hate. Some of which was in this very thread. The 'enlightened reaction' you mentioned..I'm too young to become cynical.
Good as time as any I guess, the kids are out for Thanksgiving break now. Good to reflect on that . . . Prayer for those souls encumbered within the mess in India wouldn't be amiss either.
Breaks are good, but do come back! We are few in number but strong in spirit! ;-) But yeah, breaks are good, and faith in humanity can run shallow at times....
I will not lose faith in human decency...I will not lose faith in human decency...I will not lose faith in human decency...
I'm right there with you :)

I wonder, too, whether these injustices are just too hard to absorb and if, as a defense mechanism, we just choose to explain them away. I think of recent, off the top of my head examples: Christian converts hung by Islamists, 13 year old rape victim stoned to death, thousands upon thousands being starved in Darfur, albino 6 year old killed for witch-doctory....It can just be too much to be believed.
There is certainly no excuse for turning these tragedies to satire, but I do understand the human response to so much senseless violence, the need to control it through minimizing it. Alas, here we are in 2008 and the heart of mankind is still capable of so much evil.
What to do? Thank you for the address of Indian Embassy, ED. I'm hopping over to Word to send a letter now.
I wonder, too, whether these injustices are just too hard to absorb and if, as a defense mechanism, we just choose to explain them away.
Or, as some have done on this thread, joke or laugh them away. It reminds me of something my father told me back when he still taught high school. He would show footage of the US troops liberating concentration camps post-WWII, and the images of the starving people their and the horrors would elicit from the students jokes and laughter at times, as though the horror was just too much, they had to flip on an immaturity switch to simply cope with what they were seeing.
Think we have a little bit of this on the thread? Perhaps years of practice turning horror into horror-lite?
Exactly my point. My letter to the Indian Embassy is in the mailbox.
I am doing the same Ellie.
Thanks you guys! No value can ever be placed on compassion for our fellow human beings!
Ok, for anyone here that likes the idea of sending a letter but is a tad busy or a bit lazy about going out to use snail mail (as I was), I have called the embassy and gotten an e-mail address:
This is the Ambassadors secretary.
Richard rocks!!
Aw shucks (((blush))), warnt nuthin.
1. Please show me an article where Christian missionaries have lied regarding any major issue such as this.
2. "Also"?
Given the mayhem rampant in the world today, how is this a major issue? I'm not taking the bait on your question about other stories, that would have no relevance to this story.
I don't know, being killed because you're Christian might be considered a problem by some.
What's with the "also"?
#16.2 - Socrates - "Being killed because you're a Christian might be a problem for some"
Yes, this is true, but substitute any other namecalling into the space where Christian was inserted and what do you come up with?
There are a lot of people on Newsvine who obviously just can't stand it that there are others here who do not share their hatred of Jesus Christ, the churches, Pastors and religion in general.
I think all the hate this old world has already targeted against all this has not eliminated it, or changed the truth of it. Choose to believe or not, fine... That's your choice. But Christians also have a choice and they have made theirs!
Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini tried to eliminate Jews by the most atrocious means, and failed. Persecutions have not eliminated the belief that God is Jehova. It never will. He is the great "I AM" like it or not. GG
Thank you, E. D., for posting this! We must all speak out- loud and clear- that murderous hatred and insane bigotry has no place in the world today, and we must fight it with all means necessary!
It will be interesting to see how this system works out for them.
