I disagree with Republican pundits who say that Senator McCain should choose a running mate who is considerably younger and to the right of his views on social issues. For McCain to win, he will need to bring independents and Reagan Democrats into his corner. He will need swing states or to turn a large Democratic stronghold—like New York—into a swing state. He needs someone who could be entrusted on domestic policy, as defense and national security will be the first priorities of a McCain administration. He also needs an "attack dog" to confront Democratic positions on domestic policy.
Under these circumstances his best choice for a running mate is Rudy Giuliani.
I was a staunch Giuliani supporter, and very disappointed when he dropped out of the race. The media crucified him, which is so typical of their "love you, leave you" tactics.
Anyone who watched Giuliani's concession speech had to like him, except the crowd of Ron Paul clowns over at Youtube who couldn't spend even a second thinking about what he said while patting each other on the back over their crazy Congressman candidate from Texas.
I like Guliani, but after the Cheney years and the "Darth Vader" impression the nation got, the last thing the Republicans need is a Guliani vice-presidential candidate. He seems too much to be a guy who would go off and start his own wars without consulting anybody, Tom Clancy style. The vp candidate has to be strong without seeming menacing.
Guilani would be good but it won't happen. McCain might surprise us with Lieberman or Crist as VP
I like Lieberman. He's smart and strong on defense. And there are countless Republicans who would make good running-mates. I just really thought Giuliani was a good candidate--and still think he's a really good guy, despite how many perceive him.
Menacing? Maybe. He certainly talked tough about terror. And when he did the same thing regarding crime in New York City....
I don't know. But I bet he gets a cabinet job one way or another. Attorney General, maybe?
Director of National Intelligence or of Homeland Security, maybe. He'd be a good AG too.
